Enhancing our Commitment to African Development through Access to Medicines - Takeda at TICAD7
Takeda attended the 7th annual Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) in Yokohama, Japan, August 28-30, 2019. One of the largest international conferences in the country, TICAD7 brought together leaders from across Africa and Japan, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as well as attendees from the United Nations and the World Bank, to discuss ‘Advancing Africa’s Development through People, Technology and Innovation’ and promote policy and partnerships.
This year, we were excited to share the progress of our Access to Medicines initiative, which aims to strengthen healthcare systems in a sustainable way through targeted partnerships.
Takeda, along with our key partner Amref Health Africa, showcased the impact of our access programs in Africa, and was an important event to deepen existing relationships and engage new partners who will help us mobilize action in our mission to bring better health, brighter future for everyone.
Building and strengthening partnerships
At TICAD7, Takeda renewed our partnership with Amref Health Africa and reaffirmed our joint commitment to bring lasting health change in Africa by partnering with and empowering local communities. Our collaboration with Amref is a key example of Takeda’s partnership approach to strengthening healthcare systems in Africa. Over the course of the 3-day conference, Takeda’s long-standing partnership with Amref was recognized at a special ceremony with Prime Minister Abe, as well as Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Side event: Sustainable UHC in Africa through Building Country Ownership
We were proud to co-host a side event focused on reaching the U.N.’s target of universal health coverage (UHC2030), where Dr Susanne Weissbaecker, Takeda’s Global Head of Access to Medicines, spoke alongside participants from WHO, World Bank, UNICEF, the Government of Japan, and Ministers of Health from Ghana, Senegal, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Implementing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is vastly complex with responsibility shared by a multitude of stakeholders. Representing the private sector, Dr Weissbaecker emphasized the need for sustainable partnership platforms that are locally owned and led. She also highlighted the important role leading biopharmaceutical companies like Takeda must play in accelerating and implementing access programs across the entire patient journey, leveraging our strengths in innovative financing, R&D, and patient centricity.

Takeda’s Global Vaccine President, Rajeev Venkayya also took part on a panel at the TICAD7, CEPI & Africa centres for disease control and prevention (AFRICA CDC) seminar ‘Strengthening Epidemic Preparedness and Response in Africa’ and spoke of the importance of an ecosystem to share disease risks among government, foundations and pharmaceutical industries.
