Risks to nature intensify risks to global public health, including the spread of infectious diseases that are made worse by the impacts of global climate change. This World Environment Day, and during these unprecedented times, we are proud of the progress we have made in our environmental sustainability efforts and celebrate our recent commitments that further our mission of Better Health and a Brighter Future for people worldwide.
Over the past 50 years, our programs for water and energy conservation and biodiversity protection have helped to lower risks we face from degrading air quality and water scarcity.
Earlier this year, we also announced our long-term plan to achieve carbon neutrality to further limit the impacts of global climate change. Our goal to become carbon neutral and achieve zero carbon emissions in our operations will be met by reducing our energy consumption, investing in renewable energy, decarbonizing operations, and working with suppliers to help them to reduce their own climate impacts.
To fulfill our commitment to our environment and society, our emission reduction targets are science-based and have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This means they are consistent with reductions required to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. In addition, we have set new targets for waste minimization and water stewardship to promote a healthier planet for today and for tomorrow.
We have made significant progress over the past 50 years, but we know there is a lot more to do. Together, we will make a difference.
