Short Bowel Syndrome

Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) is a rare disease (that affects about 3,000,000 people worldwide) and potentially a fatal gastrointestinal disorder in which patients are unable to absorb enough nutrients and fluids through the intestine from the food they eat. SBS generally occurs when a large portion of the intestine has been removed by surgery as a result of disease or injury. In rare cases, it is congenital.

Common symptoms of Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS)  can include  diarrhea,  dehydration,  malnutrition, and weight loss, which are closely related to the functional issues of the bowel. Treatments exist to restore the function of the intestine as much as possible so that the nutrition and fluids can be reduced mostly by infusion. Some patients with SBS receive an ostomy, which is a surgical opening created through the skin in the belly (abdomen) for the elimination of body wastes.

Takeda aims at improving the lives of patients with GI diseases through the delivery of innovative medicines and with dedicated patient disease management support, both for patients and healthcare professionals.
